Ferries, history and idling around Istanbul, the cosmopolitan city on two continents

If a city break's success can be measured by your enjoyment of it regardless of the weather, Istanbul is among the best getaway options in Europe. Beautiful Bosphorus: Istanbul sits at the junction of Europe and Asia. Not all routes were yet open, meaning travel by ferry - certainly my preference, particularly given what an attractive city Istanbul is - remained necessary if I was intending to cross the Bosphorus in both directions. The skies stayed almost clear for my last evening too, when I headed to 360 Istanbul, a rooftop bar with perfect views across the city.

Thailand travel advice: Violence mars Bangkok elections but tourism chiefs say it's 'business as usual'

Thailand's general election was disrupted by further violent protests in Bangkok over the weekend but the Tourism Authority of Thailand has insisted that the city is still safe for tourists. All areas outside of Bangkok and other tourist destinations within Thailand such as Phuket, Krabi, Samui, Hua Hin, Pattaya and Chiang Mai are not thought to have been affected by the demonstrations.

Monday flight cancellations to slow Super Bowl exodus

FlightAware counted more than 500 combined arrival and departure cancellations Newark and nearly as many at LaGuardia and Philadelphia as of 4 p.m. ET. Other busy airports in the region - New York JFK, Washington Dulles and Washington Reagan National - flight cancellations were less severe, but were still significant. Flight delays were widespread across the region, especially at Philadelphia and the three New York City-area airports. All three of the USA's biggest carriers operate a major hub at one of the New York or Philadelphia airports, meaning problems there could ripple out and affect flights elsewhere.

A new Eastern? Airline with a familiar name to launch in Miami

Eastern Air Lines Group announced Tuesday that it has taken the first step to launching a new airline in Miami. Eastern Airlines had headquarters in Miami until 1991, when it went out of business. The new company is careful to point out that it is not affiliated with the former Eastern. On its website, the company said it has moved into headquarters at Miami International Airport's Building 5 A. That's the former Eastern Operations Center.

Katie Friedman opened Solid Gold, a clothing, accessories and home design boutique, seven years ago. Many of the designers featured in the shop are Austinites, including Raven & Lily, which supports marginalized women around the world through handmade, fair-trade craft design work. On an evening walk around the tree-lined neighborhood, one could be forgiven for thinking that there's a bar and a food truck for every person in Austin. On trendy East Sixth Street, a popular encampment of food trailers includes Fried and True, where the bespectacled owner, Arielle Henson, cheerfully deep-fries everything from Oreos to fiery grilled cheese and Sriracha sandwiches.

Bettors expected to launch $30M game plan in wacky Super Bowl wagers

In gambling mecca Las Vegas, more than 50 percent of the expected record-setting $100 million in Super Bowl bets this year will be on so-called 'prop' bets - wages on a certain player or a certain scenario within the game. He says the amount of prop bets placed has doubled from just a decade ago. When the time comes to play, gamblers choose their bets from a prop sheet that can be up to a dozen pages thick. Esposito says the prop bets are so popular because those options give players cushioning - instead of placing all their cash on a single bet - like the final score.

Taking a bite out of the Big Apple

The Big Apple's history and identity is best explored through its food - dishes given a new home by waves of immigrant communities and turned into New York City icons. Nathan's annual hot-dog-eating contest has been running each 4 July ever since, and while Chicago has its 'dragged through the garden' dog, Dallas its corn dog and LA its Pink's chilli dogs, New York's dogs are perhaps the most famous. The New York bagel of choice is smoked salmon and cream cheese: in the 1930s a Kraft marketing campaign successfully promoted the bagel and cream cheese combo, while lox was sold from pushcarts on the Lower East Side by Jewish immigrants back in the early 1900s. Today, The Traditional Sandwich - a bagel filled with Nova Scotia smoked salmon, plain cream cheese, Lucky's beefsteak tomatoes, red onions and capers, served with a pickle and coleslaw - has breathed new life into a New York classic.
